Welcoming a new houseplant is an exciting moment but sometimes the journey from our greenhouse can leave your new additions in need of a little extra care. If your plant has endured a rough ride, fret not! In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the steps to helping your shipped houseplants and bring them back to their former glory.
Unbox with care: Gently unwrap your plant from our protective sleeves, paying close attention to the leaves and stems that may be standing up or sticking out. Check out our unboxing video here!
Assess any damage: Do you have broken stems or bent leaves? It’s common for a few leaves to get a bit roughed up during shipping but don’t worry - we can nurse them back to health!
Check the soil: Take a gander at soil moisture - we do our best to follow a strict watering routine so plants arrive at the perfect level of moisture but some plants retain water during their travels and some dry out! If the soil is still damp, give your plant some time to dry out before its next soak - if it’s dry, quench its thirst!
Trimming and pruning: For any broken stems or leaves that are too far gone, it’s best to trim them away using sanitized, sharp scissors or shears. This will not only improve the plant’s appearance but it’ll redirect its energy toward new, healthy growth.
Find the right spot: Look around for an ideal spot for your new addition, one that aligns with its optimal light requirements and allow it settle in.
Have patience: Remember, plants need a bit of time to adjust to their new surroundings. They just had a harrowing journey depending on how gentle your local carrier was! Give your plants at least 2 weeks to settle in and try to observe how they respond to your care.
Shipping stress is a temporary setback and with a little TLC, your houseplant will likely bounce back beautifully. If anything goes awry, don’t hesitate to reach out - we’ve got your back!
“I opened the box and my plant looks great - what next?”
“One of the tall stems is bent! How can I fix this?”
Don’t panic! Depending on how deep the crack is, most stems can fully recover when they’re offered a little support. This IG video has a great tip for splinting bent stems. If your stems have a clean break, we’d suggest just trimming the hanging leaf away so the plant’s energy will go towards new growth!
“My plant is drooping/leaned over/facing weird directions. Help!”
Plants often get confused when going from our bright greenhouse into a dark box for a few days - understandably so! Offer some light (preferably from above) to encourage the growth upright again - the stems likely won’t move overnight but they will get moving! It’s totally normal for some more delicate plants, like Alocasias, to be a little wonky looking straight out of the box, but they’ll flatten out and perk up with time.
