Bringing plants into your home can add a refreshing touch of nature to your living space, but for pet owners, it’s crucial to consider the safety of our furry companions! 🐶 🐱
Science Time
Some plants’ DNA contain an array of chemical compounds, many of which serve as defense mechanisms against predators and herbivores out in their natural habitats. These compounds, ranging from alkaloids to glycosides, can vary widely in their toxicity levels, leading to differences in the degree of harm they possess.
Some plants contain higher concentrations of these compounds which can cause immediate reactions upon ingestion while others may have cumulative effects over time. Some plants may only pose a risk if ingested, others can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions upon contact.
For our purposes here at BWH, we consider a plant to be pet-friendly if it is listed on the ASPCA Plants List - check that out here!
Think Like Your Pet
Take into account your pet’s natural curiosity and behaviors when designing your indoor garden. (Who can blame them? Plants are cool!) Strategically position plants out of reach of curious paws. Elevated surfaces such as high shelves, tall stands, or hanging baskets can serve as secure locations for your plants, preventing easy access for pets.
Consider incorporating barriers or deterrents to further discourage snooping. For example, placing decorative fencing or mesh around plant stands can create a physical barrier that prevents pets from reaching the plants. Some have luck with natural deterrents such as citrus peels or bitter-tasting sprays to discourage pets from investigating plants in reach.
Be risk free by opting for plants that are known to be safe for pets, minimizing the likelihood of harmful outcomes if your furry friends come into contact with your collection.
