How to Care for Your Pothos Plant

Caring for your Pothos plant is easy, as they only need indirect bright sunlight and to be watered when the soil gets dry. This makes pothos one of the most popular rare tropical houseplants.  If you’re looking for more care instructions, here’s how to do it.

Watering Your Pothos

Pothos need to be watered when the soil gets dry, usually about once a week.  If you live in an area without much humidity or it’s hot, the soil may dry out faster, and you’ll need to water your Pothos plant more often.

Sunlight and Indoor Light

Pothos thrive in bright indirect sunlight, making them perfect for a hanging basket, on a shelf in between two windows, or a desk in a home office.

Most species of Pothos can survive in low light, so they work inside an office, but their colors may dull, and leaves may grow smaller.  To bring their vibrancy back, rotate your Pothos plants between low light and indirect bright light.

Soil and Potting

Pothos can get waterlogged, which is why you want to make sure the soil is designed for proper drainage by using mixes with perlite, orchid bark, and other chunky materials to help keep water moving through. When repotting your Pothos plant, every one to two years is a good frequency.

Pothos is Toxic to Pets

Pothos plants are toxic to pets, including cats, dogs, rabbits, and horses, so you’ll want to keep them out of reach of all animals.

Staff Favorites

Not sure which Pothos plant to buy?  We can help! Below you’ll find a few staff favorites in alphabetical order and why we love them.

Cebu Blue

A collector-favorite pothos with narrow, pointed leaves that feature a shimmery blue-green hue. Cebu Blue thrives in bright, indirect light and develops fenestrations as it matures. It's a must-have if you're into unique foliage and rare houseplants.

Golden

A true classic, Golden Pothos features rich green leaves with yellow-gold marbling. It's one of the easiest and fastest-growing pothos types, making it ideal for beginners or anyone who wants quick, full vines. Versatile and low-maintenance, it thrives in a variety of light conditions.

Manjula

Manjula pothos is known for its creamy white and green variegated leaves with a wavy texture. No two leaves are the same, which makes it a standout in any collection. This variety loves bright, indirect light and adds a soft, elegant touch to your space.

Marble Queen

Creamy white and green marbled leaves give this variety an airy, classic feel. Marble Queen pothos is perfect for bright rooms and brings a soft contrast to neutral-toned or minimalist spaces. It grows a bit slower than other pothos, but the variegation is worth the wait.

Neon

With its striking lime-green leaves, Neon Pothos adds a vibrant, electric touch to any indoor plant collection. This variety stands out in low to medium light and grows quickly, perfect for shelves, desks, or brightening up darker corners.

Pearls and Jade

A compact pothos variety with small, delicate leaves speckled in white, green, and gray. Pearls and Jade is slower growing but offers big visual payoff with its high-contrast variegation. Great for shelves, desktops, or small spaces.
