Peperomia gets its name from the Greek words "peperi" and "homoios" because it resembles a black pepper plant.  Although they’re in the same species as the black pepper plant, they do not grow peppers.  Although they may not grow food, they do come in a variety of variegations, shapes, and sizes making them some of the most unique houseplants you can buy.

“String of Turtles” gets its name from the turtle shell shape and variegation on its tiny leaves.  Peperomia “Frost” has a silvery grey frost appearance over its lush, heart-shaped foliage.  And the ever popular “Baby Rubber Plant” also known as “Obtusifolia” has thick and lux green leaves that look and feel like rubber.  Best of all, peperomia is an easy-to-care for plant that works in a pot or from a hanging basket.

Peperomia Care Instructions

Here’s how to water, provide enough sunlight, and other plant care instructions for your new peperomia plant.

  • Watering - water your peperomia plant about once a week when the top inch of soil feels dry to prevent waterlogging the soil and causing root rot.
  • Sunlight - peperomia plants need bright but indirect sunlight between 3 and 6 hours per day to keep their variegation in full color.  Avoid direct sunlight, but dim light can be ok as long as you don’t mind the plant’s colors fading.
  • Soil - Use a well draining potting mix like our dirt bags to help prevent waterlogging.
  • Toxic to pets - Peperomia plants are generally non-toxic to pets so they are safe to have around cats, dogs, and other animals.
  • Care level - Peperomia is a beginner level plant and easy-to-care for.
