The Zamioculcas, also known as the ZZ plant, Zuzu plant, android or emerald palm, and the eternity plant, is one of the easiest indoor houseplants to care for. This also makes it one of the most popular.
Their lush, thick, and glossy leaves bring a luxurious pop of color to your space. ZZ plants are perfect if you travel a lot or sometimes forget to water your plants because they grow from a rhizome, which resembles a bulb, where they naturally store water.
Although it is a rare occurrence for indoor Zamioculcas, ZZ plants can flower displaying a small white spadix-type of flower that resembles a peace lily. The Zamioculcas plant has to be at least a few years old, in very good health, and have proper care including sunlight, soil, and water.
ZZ Plant Care Instructions
Whether you want your Zamioculcas to produce a flower, or just to be healthy, here is how to care for your ZZ plant.
Watering Instructions
Water your ZZ plant every two to three weeks once the soil has dried out. The Zamioculcas plant grows from a rhizome which stores water so you do not want to overwater it. Use a water or moisture meter to determine when the soil is dry if you’re unsure.
Soil
ZZ plants need soil that drains well as their rhizomes store water and it needs to dry out in between waterings. Look for potting mixes that have sand, perlite, or other draining materials in their mixture, or buy one of our potting mixes as each is designed carefully for houseplants.
Sunlight
ZZ plants love indirect sunlight and can grow well in low light, so don’t put them too close to a window.
Toxic to Pets
Yes, the ZZ plant or Zamioculcas is toxic to cats, dogs, and other household pets. Contact your pet’s Veterinarian immediately if you notice the plant or its leaves have been chewed or eaten.
Common Options to Buy
ZZ Plants are known for their durability and glossy foliage, and they come in a few distinct varieties to suit different styles and spaces. All options are low-maintenance, drought-tolerant, and ideal for low-light areas.
Standard Green
The most common variety, featuring thick, deep green leaves that grow upright on sturdy stems. It’s easy to care for and great for beginners or anyone who wants a classic, low-effort houseplant.
Black Queen
A unique variety with dark purple to nearly black foliage that deepens in color as it matures. It offers the same easy care as the green ZZ but adds a bold, modern twist to your plant collection.
Zenzi
A compact version of the standard ZZ, with shorter stems and tightly stacked, curled leaves. It’s perfect for small spaces, offices, or anyone looking for a more sculptural, tidy plant.
