Plant Care Tips for Travel

Going on vacation is exciting, but leaving your plants can be stressful. Don't worry, plant people! In this guide, we'll learn how to make sure your plants not only survive but also do well when you're away. We'll talk about making plans and rallying plant sitters to get your indoor jungle ready for your trip without any stress.

Plan the Plant Care

Before going out of town, create a care plan. Figure out your collection’s watering needs and light requirements and go from there. Consider factors like the duration of your trip and the environment you’re leaving behind. You may need a friend or family member’s eyes on your collection if you’ll be gone for more than a week.

If you’re enlisting some help, provide clear instructions about watering schedules, light exposure, and any specific needs each plant may have - does your Thai Constellation prefer Beyoncé or Beethoven? A plant-sitter not only ensures the well-being of your plants but also adds a personal touch to their care while you’re away.

Pro-tip: Consider inviting your recruit over for a nice meal and a lesson in houseplant care before leaving - it’s definitely not a bribe! Show them your usual routines and offer hands-on experience so they can get a feel for the job.

Hydration Preparation

Ensure your collection won’t be left thirsty in your absence. Water your plants thoroughly a day or two before leaving, giving them time to absorb moisture and release any excess before returning them to decorative pots or hangers.

Self-watering pots, plant globes, and high-tech timers are worth checking out to provide moisture while you’re gone.

Do you adjust your thermostat before you hit the road? Try to keep your temps between 65ºF - 80ºF, depending on the season and where you live, to keep your bills low and your plants happy. You wouldn’t leave your baby in a hot car, would you?

Light & Location

Consider your plant's usual exposure to light when arranging their temporary vacation spots. It’s best to turn supplemental sources like grow lights and lamps off when you’re away to be safe. Keep plants away from bright windows to slow down drying out the soil - most species can tolerate low light conditions for a while!

Return with Love

Set aside time to reacquaint yourself with your plants upon arrival - hopefully you brought back gifts! Do a thorough inspection, checking for any signs of stress, dehydration, or pest issues. Gradually reintroduce regular care routines to avoid shocking your plants if it’s been a while. Your thoughtful approach to their post-vacay care will ensure they welcome you back with vibrant, healthy leaves, ready to share in the tales of your travels!
