Things to Know Before Buying Anthurium

Anthurium is one of the most popular houseplants and a customer favorites here at BWH. But there’s a few things you should know when shopping for one so you can ensure it thrives and you can enjoy its foliage for years to come. Here is how to care for your Anthurium as well as options to consider if you’re not sure which species to purchase.

Anthurium Care

Caring for your anthurium is easier than you think. Here’s answers to questions customers just like you ask us before and after they purchase their new plant.

Sunlight

Anthurium should be placed in indirect but bright light near a window or in a corner of a room with natural light.  Although it is tropical, anthurium should not be placed in direct sunlight as this leads to leafburn. Similar to how our skin gets red and sore, the leaves will become stressed and the colors will fade which stops them from being able to photosynthesize and the plant dying.

Watering

Water your anthurium once a week when the soil looks dry. They like their soil to mostly dry out before watering, so wait until just a bit of moisture remains near the bottom of the pot before giving them a thorough soak. If you live in a humid area or somewhere cold in the winter, water your anthurium less frequently. Regardless of where you live, this species of houseplant is tropical and will enjoy added humidity from a humidifier, especially if you live in warm and dry places like the desert.

Growth

Standard anthuriums including laceleaf and crystallinum can grow between two and three feet tall. Dwarf varieties and hybrids will vary depending on the cross and specialized breeding.

Keep Away from Pets

All species of anthurium plants are toxic to dogs, cats, horses, and other animals as they contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Keep them out of reach from your pets and contact their veterinarian or a local veterinary hospital immediately if you find your furry friends have been chewing on the leaves or stems.

Staff Favorites

Ready to find your new favorite anthurium? There are more than 1,000 species including hybrids, so we’d like to share a few staff favorites to help you pick which one from the flamingo flower to the laceleaf, red or pink, and hybrids like forgetii so you can buy the perfect one for your home or office.

  • Anthurium ‘Clarinervium’ - Big, velvety leaves with bright white veins make this one a total standout. It looks fancy but is surprisingly easy to care for.
  • Anthurium ‘Radicans x Luxurians’ - Small but eye-catching, this hybrid has dark, crinkly leaves that feel textured and rich. A good pick if you like rare plants that don’t take up much space.
  • Anthurium ‘Crystallinum’ - With soft, heart-shaped leaves and silvery veins, this plant brings major jungle vibes. It's pretty easygoing for how cool it looks.
  • Anthurium ‘Fingers’ - insert one to two sentences here about why the person will love it
  • Anthurium ‘Crystallinum x Silver Blush’ - This plant has all the sparkle of a Crystallinum, plus extra silver in the leaves. It’s velvety, a little dramatic, and super pretty.
  • Anthurium 'Forgetii Hybrid’- Its round leaves have no notch at the top, giving it a smooth, modern look. It feels clean and different from your usual anthurium, and each batch is a little different!
