How to Care for Syngonium Houseplants

Syngoniums are prized for their beautiful foliage and versatility. Whether cascading from a hanging basket or climbing a trellis, Syngoniums add a touch of natural beauty to any indoor setting for seasoned plant parents and beginners alike.

WATER

• Syngoniums prefer consistently moist soil but they’re susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Offer a good soak as soon as the first few inches of soil are dry.
• They can be sensitive to minerals in tap water - explore using distilled or rainwater to keep the foliage looking vibrant.

LIGHT

• They prefer to be in bright, indirect sunlight and though they can tolerate lower light conditions, you may notice slowed growth.
• Coloring on pink varieties will be most vibrant with bright light!

HUMIDITY & TEMP

• From tropical regions, Syngoniums appreciate higher humidity. They can adapt to typical household conditions but would benefit from a humidifier to promote growth.

SOIL

• A well-draining, aerated soil is best: potting mix, perlite, orchid bark, and other chunky mediums are an excellent choice.

FERTILIZING

• A balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season will keep your Syngonium well-fed!
• Dilute to half-strength or stop fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is heading into dormancy.

PESTS

• Syngoniums are generally hardy but keep an eye out for pests like spider mites and mealy bugs.
• Regularly inspect the underside of the leaves and stem joints for hiding pests.
  • Pro-tip: Gently wiping the leaves with a damp cloth prevents dust build-up and deters pests from setting up camp. 

PRUNING & PROPPING 

• Pruning your Syngonium will help control its shape and size while promoting new growth! Remove older, yellowing leaves to encourage more energy.
