Originating in southeast Asia and Queensland Australia, elephant ear plants are a moderate care level houseplant that comes in more than 70 species.  You can find Alocasia in multiple colors like the rare "Nebula Imperialis" which has silver leaves and dark grey veins, or the popular "Alocasia Frydek" with its tricolor variegation with splotches of creamy white, light, and dark green patches.

Alocasia Care Instructions

Here is how to care for your Alocasia, and some of our staff favorites if you’re not sure which elephant ear plant to buy.

Watering

Elephant ear plants need to be watered about once a week so the soil stays evenly moist but not flooded.  The soil needs to have drainage to prevent root rot, so let the top inch of soil dry out before you water your Alocasia plant again.

Alocasia also requires more humidity than other tropical houseplants, so use a pebble tray or keep it in a grouping with other plants to help encourage comfortable levels of humidity to keep your elephant ear healthy.

Sunlight

Elephant ear plants need bright but indirect sunlight between 2 and 6 hours per day to thrive.  If they do not get enough their variegation (colors) may fade.  Do not place them in direct sunlight as this could cause their leaves to burn.

Potting and Soil

Alocasia plants need well draining soil to prevent root rot and provide enough nutrients so make sure it has an element like charcoal to keep the PH balance and drainage correct.  If you are looking for potting mix, try our dirt bag which is potting mix designed for all indoor houseplants.

Pet Safety

Elephant’s ear plants are toxic to dogs, cats, and other household pets.  If you notice a plant has been chewed or eaten, call your Veterinarian immediately.
